Ukraine Seeks Investors for Waste Treatment Plants in Major Regions

The Ukrainian Environment Ministry announced on Monday a new partnership with UkraineInvest aimed at attracting investors for the construction of waste treatment plants in the Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Zakarpattia regions. Established in 2016,  UkraineInvest serves as the government’s investment promotion office.

The initiative aims to improve the country’s waste management infrastructure.

“We need to create quality infrastructure to protect the environment. The costs are obviously high. Our estimates show a network of waste treatment facilities can cost Ukraine 4-5 billion euros while meeting the requirements of the Water Framework Directive may need 8 billion euros,” said Yevheniy Fedorenko, Deputy Minister for European Integration.

Ukrainian officials are optimistic that “favorable conditions” can attract investors for construction of these essential facilities. This could include not only waste treatment plants but also terminals and educational institutions.

To align with European standards, Ukraine’s government earlier moved to introduce stricter policies for landfills and dump sites.
