Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigations said on Tuesday it had filed charges against Lviv businessman Ihor Hrynevych, who is accused of offering a $500,000 bribe to the bureau’s official after media reports revealed his company supplied substandard military uniforms to the Ukrainian army.
“The case of the Lviv businessman was brought to court after he offered $500,000 to one of the senior investigators of the State Bureau of Investigations. The money was offered to help him recover his [frozen] assets and close the criminal investigation into his companies, which were among the largest contractors to the Ukrainian army.
Hrynevych was arrested after offering to meet the Bureau investigator in a restaurant, where he tried to hand the official a bag of money.
He faces charges of bribery and supplying substandard clothing to the Ukrainian army, causing damage of over 1 billion hryvnias, which could put him behind bars for up to 12 years.
