In a press conference on Friday, Ukraine’s interior Minister Ihor Klymenko disclosed new details in the shocking murder of acclaimed scholar Iryna Farion.
It took police some 150 hours to track down an 18-year-old man in Dnipro. which is over 940 kilometers from Lviv where the murder had taken place.
The ballistic report showed that Farion had been shot with a non-combat cartridge, and the killer used a modified gun that still needs to be found. A shot casing found at the scene of the murder helped police trace it to the batch of ammo that had been imported to Ukaine in 2017 or 2018.
Video surveillance analysis showed the killer had waited for Iryna Farion outside her home for over 2 hours and then shot her from a 2-meter distance.
Police had to interview900 witnesses and used footage and face recognition tools to identify the suspect. The sky goggles he wore on that day made his identification process difficult; it suffered some delay as police examined at least 80 individuals bearing a resemblance to the killer.
The suspect had reportedly arrived in Lviv on July 9. In an awkward attempt to cover his tracks, the young man had his disguise items sent into his name to Lviv where he also rented 3 different apartments.
Investigation is exploring the possible involvement of Russia’s intelligence agencies. The look inside the alleged killer’s mobile phone revealed he had an electronic copy of the book titled”Secret Instructions of the KGB and CIA”, and was following a neo-Nazi groups on Telegram, though his true crime motives are yet to be established.
