Investment During Wartime: SCM Has Invested $4.3 Billion in Ukraine’s Economic Recovery
Internationally recognized brands and financial institutions should direct capital to Ukraine now, not waiting for the hostilities to end. This was emphasized by Rinat Akhmetov, president of FC Shakhtar, during a working visit to UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, where he met with UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
The meeting focused on practical steps to support the Ukrainian economy. In particular, this season, Shakhtar’s match T-shirts feature the slogan “Invest in Ukraine” alongside the SCM logo. The club president emphasized that real support for the country is measured not by slogans, but by concrete financial decisions.
“When we say that we support, that is good in words, but when you invest, it is no longer just words, it is action. That is why SCM’s businesses have invested $4.3 billion since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, and we will continue to do so,” Akhmetov said, calling on global businesses to take a more active role in investing in Ukrainian projects.
According to the football club’s website, the visit to Nyon also coincided with the official commemoration of Shakhtar’s 90th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of the club being led by its current president. Aleksander Čeferin presented Akhmetov with a commemorative award in recognition of his management achievements at a time when the club lost its home stadium, Donbas Arena, back in 2014 and has had to adapt to unprecedented challenges. The meeting was also attended by the club’s CEO, Serhii Palkin, and sporting director, Darijo Srna.
The participants also paid particular attention to the resilience of Ukrainian society and the prospects for post-war development. Rinat Akhmetov expressed his belief that Ukraine will overcome all the challenges it faces, achieve long-term peace, integrate into the European Union, and once again host major football events at peaceful Ukrainian stadiums.
