Estonia said on Thursday it has transferred one of its energy units from the Auvere power plant to Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s energy ministry, the unit can provide electricity for approximately 150,000 people.
The transfer was part of agreements reached between Ukraine’s deputy energy minister Mykola Kolisnyk and Estonian prime minister Kristen Michal.
The unit was dismantled at the Estonian power station in Auvere that is located 20 kilometers from Narva. Constructed between 1963 and 1973, the plant boasted a total capacity of 1,615 MW as of 2005. Estonian officials revealed the decesion to give it to Ukraine was made in May 2024 long after the unit was put out of action.
Andres Vainola, a member of the management board of Eesti Energia, compared the dismantling process to what children do when they take disssamble a Lego set into parts.
Eesti Energia earlier said that 2 out of 8 Auvere plant units are ready to be shipped to Ukraine, while the remaining ones are set to be used as spare parts. Two additional units are expected to be transferred in 2025.
