Russian agent posing as a UN volunteer caught spying in Pokrovsk – SBU

The Security Service of Ukraine, SBU, said on Monday they have arrested a FSB agent who posed as a “UN volunteer” gathering intelligence on Ukrainian military positions near Pokrovsk. The detained 34-year-old local resident pretended to be working for the UN’s World Food Programme.

His assumed volunteer role made it possible for him to move around the town and its suburbs snooping on Ukrainian defense positions while delivering humanintarian aid to locals.

The agent would later send the information to his FSB handler via a messaging app. SBU counterintelligence identified this handler, whihc threw a wrench in the espionage plot that could lead to more strikes against Ukrainian defenses around Pokrovsk.

During the search, authorities seized a phone containing proof of his communications with the FSB. Authorities charged the suspect with high treason under Article 111 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and asset confiscation.
