Ukrainian soldier caught directing Russian strike at his own brigade

Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, detained a Ukrainian soldier in Kharkiv who argeed to help Russian troops to direct strikes targeting his brigade’s positions.  The recently mobilized 45-year-old Kharkiv resident was recruited by the Russian military intelligence in August.

The turncoat had allegedly been promised he would be taken to Russia after he helped to pinpoint the locations for a Russian missile strike on his own unit.

After he scouted near Ukrainian air defense positions, the suspect marked the key targets on Google Maps and sent them to his Russian handler.

The soldier planned he would slip to the frontline and cross into Russian-held territory through a specially prepared “escape corridor.”

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) arrested him just as he was preparing to flee to Russia.  The operation also helped prevent the missile attack on the Ukrainian positions.

Investigation found mobile phones the suspect had used to communicate with Russian intelligence. T

The SBU has formally charged the suspect under Article 111, Part 2, of Ukraine’s Criminal Code – state treason committed under martial law. The court has denied him any possibility of bail as he faces life in prison.
