On June 11, during the meeting, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights supported the draft law on combating sexism during elections and balancing the representation of women and men in the parliament and local councils.

The members of the Committee discussed the draft law on the amendments to the Election Code of Ukraine on combating sexism in election processes and ensuring balanced representation of women and men in the Verkhovna Rada and local councils.

According to the results of the discussion, the committee decided to support the draft law.

The Explanatory Note says that according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as of the end of 2023, the level of representation of women in the Verkhovna Rada reached 21.1%. In general, this is the largest indicator in the entire history of Ukraine’s independence.

However, the practice of conducting local elections showed that, despite the legal obligation to observe the gender quota, some subjects of the electoral process tried to ignore it during the nomination and registration of candidates.
