53 years ago archeologists found the Gold Pectoral from Tovsta Mohyla

On June 21, 1971, in the burial mound of Tovsta Mohyla in Dnipro region, archeologist Borys Mozolevskyi found the greatest archaeological treasure of Ukraine – the Scythian golden pectoral.

The decoration of the Scythian king became known all over the world.

It probably dates dates back to the 4th century BC, and was made by Greek goldsmiths, probably in a workshop located in Scythian lands.

The excavation site had been looted a long time ago, so such a find was a real miracle. ‘It is easier to believe in mysticism than in the fact that robbers could really overlook such a treasure,’ Borys Mozolevskyi wrote.

The pectoral weighs over a kilogram and is made of gold. The chest decoration has 3 tiers, each of which depicts different scenes with plants, animals, and people.

It is now in the Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine in Kyiv.
