Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban said that a ceasefire could help ‘speed up’ peace talks with Russia following his discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During his surprise visit to Kyiv, Viktor Orban, who took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union on July 1, emphasized the serious impact the war in Ukraine has had on EU security.
He also said that Budapest ‘highly values’ the peace initiatives of the Ukrainian leader.
“I told Zelenskyy that it might take much time to realize these initiatives due to the complicated rules of international diplomacy. I asked Zelenskyy to consider if it can be handled with a different approach. First comes a ceasefire, and then peace talks, as a ceasefire can speed up the tempo of these [peace] negotiations,” Orban explained after his press conference, adding that he is grateful to Zelenskyy for “his opinion on this matter.”
