Ukraine’s power grid operator to stop measuring power consumption for two weeks

Ukraine’s power grid operator, Ukrenergo, said Monday it will stop to measure power consumption in regions for 2 weeks starting July 9.

According to the company’s statement,  it will use scheduled blackouts in all regions of Ukraine.  Regional power operators will implement 2- zone power outages- from 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and then switch to a four-zone blackouts from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, while the remaining periods of day will see three-zone power shutoffs.

The decision means the company has to go back on its earlier plan to drop blackouts scheduling for Ukraine’s regions as the power grid is dealing with a ‘significant power shortage and increased consumption driven by hot temperatures… Under these conditions, distribution companies will not be able to use to equal power consumption limits during measurements in a specific region”.

The company promised regular measurements will be renewed later this summer once the power grid situation stabilizes and temperatures decrease.

Previously, deputy energy minister Mykola Kolisnyk said Ukraine may need to increase power imports to 2.2 GW to ease the power grid issues.

In June, Ukraine imported 858,300 MWh of electricity, a 91% increase compared to the previous month, according to ExPro Electricity monitoring data.
