Ukrainian Railways employee in the Donetsk region has been detained for allegedly spying for Russia’s Federal Security Service

According to the SBU, the suspect had been gathering intelligence on Ukrainian forces stationed near Pokrovsk. His Russian handlers ordered him to help pinpoint the coordinates of key defensive positions and artillery placements of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area.

The espionage didn’t stop there –  they were also keen on discovering the locations of bridges used by Ukrainian defense forces along the eastern front. These strategic details were crucial for the Russian troops as they plotted new military operations near Pokrovsk.

To gather this critical information, the suspect scouted the area and discreetly probed his colleagues for details, often without them realizing his true intentions. The intelligence he gathered was meticulously compiled into text reports, with potential targets highlighted on digital maps.

The Ukrainian security agency tracked the spy’s activities and moved in for the arrest on Wednesday. They seized the suspect’s mobile phone he allegedly used to communicate with his FSB contacts.

Investigation revealed that the man had been recruited by the FSB earlier this spring. A resident of the Pokrovsk district, he caught the attention of Russian operatives after leaving anti-Ukrainian comments on pro-Kremlin Telegram channels.

The detained individual has been charged under art. 111 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code of Ukraine. He is currently in custody, facing the grim prospect of life imprisonment.
