On his 5th visit to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after it was seized by Russian troops in 2022, Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency said its cooling tower damaged in August 11 attack may need to be demolished.
“Until today, we hadn’t been able to get to this point, high up in the tower, so we can assess in a much better way the damage that occurred,” said Grossi, adding that “this big structure is not usable in the future, so it will probably be demolished at some point.”
The fire at the cooling tower broke out on 11th August following a shelling as both Ukraine and Russia pointing the finger at each other over the incident. The IAEA described the last month blaze as another “reckless attack” but chose not to blame directly either of the sides.
