The South Ukraine nuclear power plant cut its power output by a third on Thusday after one of its reactors had a ‘malfunction’ in its coolant pump, according to Oleg Korikov, the chief inspector of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate.

The situation is being addressed by the nuclear site specialists. The pump, one of the four used for circulating cool water in the reactors, is now being given necessary repairs. Once the repair work is complete, the power plant is expected to go back to producing its full output.

Korikov stressed that the issue poses no immediate safety threat, being rated at zero on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
