2 taxi drivers arrested in Moldova for helping Ukrainian men sneak out of the country

Two men have been arrested in Moldova for helping Ukrainian men eager to dodge the draft with illegal crossing of the country’s border, according to reports from Moldova’s Organized Crime and Special Cases Prosecution.

The suspects, both taxi drivers from the Moldovan towns of Rezina and Rîbnița, allegedly arranged for transport so that Ukrainian men could get from the breakaway region of Transnistria to the Moldova’s capital, Chișinău. The drivers charged as much as $2,000 for their services, prosecutors said.

Searches conducted at the homes and vehicles of the suspects revealed mobile phones and other evidence that law enforcement believes can confirm their involvement in the scheme.

Both men have been taken into custody for 30 days by the Chișinău Court in the city’s Checani district, as investigations into the case continue.
