Ukraine launches new digital marriage service

Ukraine’s state-run digital platform Diya offering online access to public services and records has rolled out a new king new service: nline marriages. The Ministry of Digital Transformation that is behind the project said Ukrainians can now complete the entire marriage process – from applying to receiving their marriage certificate – without ever visiting a registration office.

“Say goodbye to long lines and piles of paperwork! Now, all you need is a few clicks in ‘Diya’ to go from single to married,” the ministry’s announcement excitedly states.

This new service can be seen as a convinient tool for military personnel and couples separated by distance, even across countries. The online ceremony with an officiant will last about 30 minutes, and the marriage certificate will appear in the app right after while paper certificates can be sent on request.

Notably, newlyweds will be able to change their surname or keep it as is during the registration. This innovation is the result of collaboration between the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Ministry of Justice, the State Enterprise “National Information Systems,” the State Migration Service, and Ukrposhta.

The US company Cisco is part of the project providing the technical support for the video conferencing needed for these ceremonies.
