Ukraine’s Security Service said on Tuesday they have dismantled a Russian spy network operating in Zaporizhzhia. The group were gathering intelligence on Ukrainian military positions, pinpointing Russian airstrikes on key military and infrastructure targets.

The agents tried to find air defense systems, defense force bases, and defense industry facilities in Zaporizhzhia and its suburbs.  They also spied on the routes used to transport Ukrainian arms and ammunition to the front lines.

The SBU agents arrested two local residents.  One of them was a woman who worked on a local military industry plant. She allegedly passed on information about the location of workshops producing military equipment and snooped on the damage inflicted by Russian missile strikes on the facility she worked at.

The second agent was caught red-handed while spying on the Ukrainian military units stationed in Zaporizhzhia. He moved around the city and used casual conversations with his acquaintances to pry out the information about Ukrainian troops.

During searches of their homes, authorities found mobile phones and computers containing evidence of their collaboration with Russian intelligence.

Both individuals remain in custody and are facing treason and espionage charges under art. 111, 114 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
