Things just got heated between Ukraine and Poland during recent talks in Kyiv between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski.  The leaders reportedly had a tough and uncomfortable discussion about the highly sensitive topic of the Volyn tragedy . According to Polish journalist Marcin Terlik, Warsaw may use its leverage in Brussels to put the heat on Ukraine over this historical issue, especially in the context of Ukraine’s ongoing push for EU membership.

Sources say the Polish side felt taken aback by Zelensky’s negotiating style. Warsaw expressed frustration over Ukraine’s stance on the exhumation of victims from the Volyn massacre, a key concern for Poland. And they’re not planning to let it slide — Polish officials are already preparing to take concrete action soon.

UPoland’s upcoming presidency of the European Union, set to begin in January 2025, can change a lot. Sources suggest that Poland might use its position to shape Ukraine’s EU integration talks, demanding resolution of historical grievances as part of the deal.

However, there’s one thing Poland made clear: defense matters won’t be up for negotiation, no matter how tense things get.
