The company BAE Systems is gearing up to repair and eventually manufacture M777 towed howitzers in Ukraine.

The plan was revealed by the company’s CEO Christian Seear at the DFNC2 International Defense Industries Forum in Kyiv. He said Ukraine has several ‘great companies’ that left him ‘impressed”, and BAE Systems is ‘working’ with one of them on the M77 howitzers maintenance project.

This anticipated collaboration aims to provide not just repair and maintenance for the howitzers, but also spare parts and personnel training. Seear stressed that this partnership represents a long-term interaction than can spur Ukraine’s industrial sector as a whole.

While the timeline for starting repairs and production remains under wraps, officials are keeping quiet about the Ukrainian companies involved for security reasons. Seears said the company will focus on weapons’ maintenance though his company’s ‘long-term strategy’ assumes it will launch assembly and local-based production.
