Police in Zakarpattia has exposed a group of criminal loggers who chopped down trees worth 40 million hryvnias.
To prevent police raids, the suspects even spiked barriers and metal “hedgehogs” on mountain roads and even damaged a bridge leading to the site of their illegal logging.
Law enforcement arrested the gang members and blocked the operations of illegal sawmills they used to produce timber out of trees they were logging in the Stebnyi tract and a nearby protected natural reserve.
Timber was later quietly sold across Ukraine, with no documentation verifying its origin.
Police have filed charges against two of the detained suspects.
