Ukraine’s Security Service said on Thusday that its operatives and cyber experts foiled a sabotage plot in Dnipro where they arrested a Russian intelligence agent.  The 48-year-old local locksmith was found plotting a series of arson attacks targeting military vehicles and vital infrastructure across the region.

Acting on orders from Russian FSB handlers, the suspect snooped on the locations of Ukrainian military units and reported on the aftermath of Russian airstrikes.  He was also tasked to make explosive devices for sabotage acts. The Russian intellegence wanted him to plant those under the vehicles of Ukrainian soldiers,

The timely intervention of the SBU foiled the plot arresting the man who was both a hobby chemist and a Russian sympathizer, which could prove to be a combustuble mix.  During a search of his home, investigators seized his mobile phone, which contained evidence of his collaboration with the enemy.

The suspect now faces charges of treason under Ukraine’s Criminal Code, with the potential for life imprisonment and asset confiscation.
