Azov Brigade commander slams smear campaign against his fellow soldiers

Denys Prokopenko, the commander of the 12th Azov Special Operations Brigade, took to social media on Tuesday to respond to what he called a coordinated attempt to tarnish the reputation of his brigade. He attributed the mud-slinging attack on “domestic detractors seeking political leverage in the lead-up to elections”.
In his statement issued on Facebook, Prokopenko condemned the smear campaign, calling it is “disgraceful” and “doomed to fail.”
“A shameful campaign to discredit Azov has begun. Strangely, most seem to act as if the war is over and have started gearing up for elections. Unfortunately, this time, the culprits are not Russians— even they wouldn’t stoop this low. I’ll disappoint the perpetrators: this is a dead end. No one will ever tarnish the name or storied legacy of Azov,” he declared.
The commander staunchly defended his subordinates, dismissing allegations of ties to pro-Russian organizations, collaboration with hostile media, or involvement in corruption.
“I’m not writing this to justify myself before draft-dodgers, bribe-takers, or propagandists abroad who spin intrigues. I stand for my deputies, who have served alongside me for over 10 years in continuous frontline duty.”
In response to the allegations, Prokopenko said he was open to any investigations, arguing that Azov-affiliated funds are ready for external audits to verify proper use of resources.
He praised the “Heart of Azovstal” project, which has provided new housing for hundreds of servicemen displaced by the war.
“Those who gave their all to defend Ukraine, guaranteeing peace and safety for its cities with their blood, sweat, and sacrifice—these people deserve housing from the state or charity campaigns. We will continue to ensure our fighters, the best people I know, are taken care of.”
Prokopenko assured that any evidence of corruption within the brigade would result in immediate action, including the removal and prosecution of the individuals involved.
He also urged the public not to fall for what he called “provocation and divisive narratives”, promising to continue supporting his troops and act in the best interests of Ukraine.
“We will not be swayed by lies or schemes. Our mission remains unchanged: to defend our homeland and uphold the honor of those who stand on the frontlines.”
