The Security Service of Ukraine said on Tuesday it has dismantled a major Russian spy network operating across five regions of Ukraine. The group was gathering intelligence on the locations of F-16 fighter jets and other key defense assets.
The network was managed by a resident of the Dnipropetrovsk region who used falsified documents posing as a “volunteer” and “anti-corruption activist”.
The man found accomplices in Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Odesa regions. Some members of the group turned out to be servicemen who deserted from the Ukrainian army.
Recruited by Russian intelligence services, they snooped on air defense positions, military airfields, and facilities involved in electronic warfare production.
During raids, the SBU found incriminating evidence and charged the suspects with treason and unauthorized dissemination of military information. If convicted, they face sentences ranging from eight years to life imprisonment, along with the confiscation of their property.
