Ukrainian troops have targeted a key Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region, a strategic site for the Russian military, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

The operation was a joint effort by the Ukrainian Navy, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and other Defense Forces units.

“This is the only refinery operating in the Rostov region and is used to supply the Russian Armed Forces,” said the General Staff.

The refinery produces fuel oil, straight-run gasoline, furnace fuel, marine fuel, and diesel fuel, and has a processing capacity of 7.5 million tons of crude oil annually.

The drone stikes caused a fire at the refinery’s catalytic cracking unit called ELOU-AVT-2.5, but the extent of the damage is still unclear as Russian officials are trying to cover it up.
