Ukrainian expenses on Russian POWs estimated at 294 million hryvnas – reports

Ukraine has spent 294.2 million hryvnias on housing, food, and medical for Russian prisoners of war (POWs) since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, according to a report by the country’s Accounting Chamber.
Under the Geneva Conventions, countries are obligated to provide for POWs. The Russian aggression made Ukraine establish a special detention system managed by the Ministry of Justice.
It created 4 specialized camps for POWs, while over 50 other facilities were used for housing, guarding, and providing medical care to detainees. The effort has been supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross contributed significantly to this effort.
The Accounting Chamber recommended tighter oversight of expenditures to ensure transparency and efficiency at such facilitiies.
Meanwhile, its estimates can prove useful for future legal cases against Russia. “These expenses will form part of Ukraine’s financial claims against the aggressor state. Our evidence must be substantial and irrefutable,” said Kyrylo Klymenko, a member of the Accounting Chamber overseeing the audit.
