Ukrainian border guards stopped a 42-year-old man from Khmelnytskyi and his  78-year-old mother-in-law as they were going to cross the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, pretending to be a married couple.

ID checks revealed the two had registered their marriage in Kyiv last year in an obvious attempt to help him go to Italy to dodge the military service. The border guards also discovered that the man had a child with the daughter of his so-called “wife.”

The man’s excuse? He said he was escorting her abroad for medical treatment, which is one of the common tricks Ukranian men use while trying to avoid the ongoing mobilization.  The scheme fell through as border officials didn’t buy into his story denying him exit from the country.
