Ukrainian troops may soon have another fish to fry after the country’s agriculture ministry suggest that military cooks replace imported fish like  hake and pangasius with local fish like bighead carp and white amur.

This move is set to reduce “reliance on imported products” and support local production.

Last year, Ukraine spent nearly 40 billion hryvnias on imported fish for state needs. The ministry’s new policy would shift procurement toward Ukrainian products, a move that Minister of Agrarian Policy Vitalii Koval believes will benefit the nation’s economy.

The minister cited the chief diet expert at Ukraine’s health ministry who earlier claimed that bighead carp and white amur are more nutritious than imported fish varieties.
