Today, the Kyiv museum presented several artifacts from the collection of the Scythian gold, which was returned from the Netherlands.
The collection arrived in Ukraine after ten years of court trials.
It consists of artifacts from four Crimean museums: the Tavrida Central Museum, the Kerch Historical and Cultural Reserve, the Chersonesus National Reserve and the Bakhchisarai Historical and Cultural Reserve.
Until the liberation of Crimea, the collection will be kept in Kyiv.
‘Our diplomats, lawyers, cultural figures, law enforcement officers and special services carried out extensive work to return valuables. We are grateful to the world community, which stands in solidarity with Ukraine. We are grateful to everyone involved in this mission,’ said Ukraine’s acting culture minister Rostyslav Karandeev.
At the beginning of 2014, the collection of the Scythian gold was sent to an exhibition in Amsterdam at the Allard Pierson Archaeological Museum. However, after the Russian occupation of Crimea, the question arose about where to return the collection with a total insurance value of 10 million dollars.
Russia declared its rights to part of the collection, and Ukraine noted that the collection could not be returned to the occupied territory. In 2016, the District Administrative Court of Amsterdam recognized Ukraine’s rights to the collection, deciding to transfer it to Kyiv.
On October 6, the Administrative Cassation Court within the Supreme Court of Ukraine continued hearing case No. 990/80/25, in which the fifth President and leader of the party “European Solidarity”, Petro Poroshenko, seeks to have Presidential Decree No. 81/2025 from February 12, 2025 — enacting sanctions by the decision of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) — declared illegal and annulled. The plaintiff claims the document was falsified and that the sanctions are a tool of political persecution of the opposition, contrary to international norms. Government representatives deny the allegations and insist their actions were lawful. Journalists of Bukvy were present at the hearing.
