Emergency power cuts hit Kyiv and 4 major regions amid Russian attacks

It’s lights out in Ukraine’s capital and across several key regions as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday a emergency power cuts have been rolled out in Kyiv and  Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, and Donetsk regions.

This unscheduled blackout was called by DTEK, the major energy provider, following urgent directives from Ukrenergo. The sudden power cuts threw a wrench into the usual schedules—electricity could go out at any moment without warning.

This rather unwelcome move comes on the heels of a massive attack on August 26, where Russian forces launched a total of 127 missiles and 109 drones. The assault wreaked havoc on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to severe damage and prompting the need for immediate emergency measures.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s energy ministry had introduced planned power outages to stabilize the grid, but now it seems even those plans have been tossed aside as the things go awry.
