The operator of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants  has dismissed reports claiming an accident occurred at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant (SUNPP) on 4 September. The company promplty issued a statement calling such claims “inaccurate”.

It, though, admitted the nuclear site dealt with a malfunction which prompted a reduction output to 33% of its nominal capacity, as required by regulations. The issue will be addressed once Ukrenergo repairs damaged power lines and restores the ability to distribute electricity.

The company stressed that the current issue was caused by “complex transitional modes” that ensued after the enemy shelling of Ukrenergo’s infrastructure. These attacks have resulted in “significant fluctuations in the network parameters connected to the reactors”.

Energoatom urged the public to rely solely on official sources for accurate information. It is worth noting that rumors of an alleged accident at the plant were spread on social media by Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director of the Energy Research Center, who reported a power reduction at the reactor and potential unscheduled shutdowns, citing two ‘independent sources’.
