European Commission hints Ukraine may need reformat state telethon

The European Commission hinted Kyiv will need to look for ways to restore media pluralism despite the . In its October report that offers an assessment of the EU candidate countries, including Ukraine, Brussels said the policy of having a sole news platform needs to be ‘re-assessed’.

“The Ukrainian government invested public funds into the TV marathon project. It should  be re-assessed whether this is the best platform for enabling a free exchange of views among Ukrainians,” the report stated.

The Commission also pointed out that the Rada TV channel should cover the ‘work of the parliamentary opposition’.

The report comes as a signal that countries like Ukraine need to restore a ‘transparent and independent media landscape’.
