Former logistics chief of Ukraine’s armed forces appointed new Ukroboronprom CEO

Oleg Hulyak steps in as the new General Director of Ukroboronprom after the exit of its former head Herman Smetanin who earlier got promoted to become Ukraine’s  Minister for Strategic Industries.

The Ukroboronprom supervisory board selected Hulyak after a careful selection process that saw over 20 candidates competing for the post. Until September, Hulyak served as Smetanin’s advisor  on military cooperation.

The selection process included input from Ukraine’s representation at Odgers Berndtson, as well as the officials from the U.S., U.K., and German embassies.

David Lomdzharia, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ukroboronprom, welcomed Hulyak’s appointment as a significant step, giving him credit for his earlier work in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and his leadership role in the logistics branch of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Lomdzharia described Hulyak as an “innovative and responsible” leader with a deep understanding of the needs of Ukraine’s Defense Forces.

Oleg Hulyak has had a long military career. Born in 1972, he served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces since 1993, beginning his service as Deputy Commander of a reconnaissance unit.

Hulyak took part in several peacekeeping operations in Iraq and combat missions in Eastern Ukraine. In 2021-2024, he rose through the ranks to become the  Commander of the Armed Forces’ Logistics Forces.
