Some 150 people are now getting detained daily for trying to sneak across the border without the right paperwork said Ukraine’s Border Service spokesperson Andriy Demchenko in his comments for My Ukraina.
He though admitted there has been a dip in the numbers.
By contrast, fake documents are a common occurence at border crossings. Every day, officials deny border entry to around 100-150 people for reasons that range from missing documents to blatant attempts at document fraud.
“Some [men] don’t have the right paperwork, others are trying to game the system,” Demchenko said.
Meanwhile, male travelers face a strict checkpoint requirement—showing a military registration card that is double checked by border officials through “Oberyh” system that tracks military registration.
