Hungary starts evicting some Ukrainian refugees from shelters

Thousands of the Ukrainian refugees who found refuge in Hungary fleeing from war may soon end up homeless after Budapest decided to cut back on accomodation programs for Ukrainians.

According to media reports, 120 Ukrainian refugees were evicted on the morning of August 21 in the city of Koc with most of the evicted found to be Transcarpathian Roma who had lived state-funded private shelter. Some of them repotedly spent the night on the streets.

The recent update to the Hungarian government’s decree made efffective on Thursday will provide housing aid only to Ukrainians coming from the regions hit by by military actions.

The UN Refugee Agency has called on Hungary to reverse this decision. According to UN estimates, up to three thousand refugees out of 30,000 Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Hungary could soon lose their subsidized housing.
