Is war in Ukraine affecting the climate? – Ukraine’s weather service commentary

Could the ongoing conflict in Ukraine be altering the climate?  The answer is nuanced, according to a statement by Natalia Ptukha, expert of Ukrhydrometcenter, Ukraine’s weather service.  While the hostilities may have some indirect  impact on the climate,  its scale remains insignificant as, overall, ‘local proccesses’ cannot substantially change global weather patterns.

Nataliya Ptukha believes that while the war in Ukraine can be only “one of many contributing factors” affecting weather conditions, and it would be wrong to take it as a major driver behind the climate change

“These things have different scale.  The global movements of air masses are very powerful synoptic processes, and local events cannot affect them significantly. They might contribute to it partially, but to claim they are a primary cause—no,” she clarifies.

Meanwhile the Ukrhydrometcenter is actively studying the effects of military actions on specific weather factors.
