In Ukraine, men more often then women seek sexual violence compensations after the goverment launched a program offering payments for survivors of wartime sexual abuses, according to Kateryna Levchenko, Ukraine’s Gender Policy Commissioner.
Although the official failed to reveal the figures, the reports show that at least 270 people have submitted such claims. She said the trend challenges the stereotype that sexual violence affects only women.
Levchenko urged Ukrainian lawmakers to green-light the bill “On the Status of Individuals Affected by Sexual Violence Related to Armed Aggression by the Russian Federation Against Ukraine and Urgent Interim Reparations’ . The policy has already been recommended for approval by a parliamentary committee.
Russia’s sexual violence crimes in Ukraine can be a valid reason for the UN to remove Moscow from the organization’s peacekeeping missions.
“Currently, Russia is still part of these ‘peacekeeping processes.’ Advocacy is crucial, as is understanding how we can collaborate with international partners at both bilateral and societal levels to ensure this happens,” Levchenko stressed.
