Olha Stefanishyna appointed Ukraine’s justice minister

In a major shake-up of Ukraine’s goverment, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Olha Stefanishyna as the new Minister of Justice while allowing her to continue serving as Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration. The decision was supported by 253 members of parliament.

This appointment follows the departure of Denys Maliuska, now the former justice minister. Stefanishyna’s new dual role has raised some eyebrows among some lawmakers as many question if she is able to juggle so many responsibilities in several high-level positions.

“Nearly every faction asked how one person will handle the responsibilities of being deputy prime minister for European integration, leading the EU negotiation group, and heading the ministry of justice. There is no clear answer,” said Iryna Herashchenko, co-chair of the European Solidarity faction.
