The Chudniv community of Zhytomyr Region is reeling after laboratory tests proved on Tuesday that a grim discovery, carcasses of some 200 pigs, carried the infection of African Swine Fever (ASF).

According to the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, residents reported finding the remains of pigs near the village of Tyutyunnyky. The carcasses, weighing 20-30 kg each, were dumped in bags near a pit and were in advanced stages of decomposition.

Samples taken from the remains were sent for analysis, and the Zhytomyr Regional State Laboratory confirmed ASF.

Authorities said they acted swiftly and disposes of all pig carcasses while the contaminated area was treated with the solution of “ALOSEPT VET.”

Veterinary specialists conducted door-to-door inspections and clinical examinations of pigs within the protection and surveillance zones. After 114 pigs were inspected. No suspicious cases were detected.

  • A comprehensive ASF eradication plan was approved, including establishing boundaries for the infection zone and investigation by law enforcement agencies.

The Zhytomyr District Administration urges residents to follow veterinary and sanitary requirements, report any unusual deaths among animals promptly, and avoid contact with potentially infected pigs.

“African Swine Fever poses a significant threat, but these measures will help contain the outbreak and prevent its further spread,” the administration stated.
