At least 55,000 individuals are now registered as missing in Ukraine, with the majority being military personnel. The grim figure was revealed by Internal Affairs  deputy minister Leonid Tymchenko, who though added that the statistics remains in constant flux as some missing persons are found either in captivity or tragically among the deceased.

“Most of the missing are soldiers,” saidTymchenko. “The numbers shift frequently. In some cases, we discover that individuals thought to be missing are actually in enemy captivity. Sadly, we also identify deceased individuals who were once reported missing.”

The National Police has taken steps to reunite families with their loved ones, collecting 751 DNA profiles from relatives of missing persons living abroad. The effort helped 107 Ukrainian families  identify their missing relatives among the previously unidentified bodies.

Authorities conducted such DNA sample collection in countries including Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Turkey. They now plan to expand the initiative to Switzerland.
