Poroshenko calls for stronger ties with U.S. Republican party

Former Ukrainian President and the European Solidarity party leader, Petro Poroshenko, is urging the country’s government to boost collaboration with the Republican Party in the U.S. to secure robust American support.

Poroshenko warned Ukrainian leaders have a “narrow window of opportunity” to end the war.

“What do we need to do? Trump’s game plan for Putin is crystal clear to me. He’s got the arguments to corner Putin. But Ukrainians can’t sit back and relax. We’ve got homework to do. Weakness isn’t an option! If we show cracks, Putin has zero incentive to stop this madness. He doesn’t care for the losses of his troops, and he doesn’t care for the money he has wasted. He’s drunk on war, consumed by bloodlust. Ukraine must show its strenght to stop this carnage,” Poroshenko emphasized with fiery resolve.

Poroshenko called Donald Trump, the newly elected U.S. President, a man of “action and results”, adding that Trump’s leadership could help Ukraine secure its goals. But the opportunity is fleeting, and there’s no room for error.

He also pointed out Kyiv will have to deal with the situation where 100 Republican Congress members back Ukraine, while close to 90 are not in its camp. And there’s a critical swing group of about 30 lawmakers whose stance on Ukrainian aid is still up in the air.

“This is the largest number of supporters we’ve ever had, yet it highlights a failure to maintain bipartisan backing—something the current Ukrainian administration couldn’t hold on to,” Poroshenko noted.

The Congress recently rejected Joe Biden’s proposal to allocate $24 billion to Ukraine.  Poroshenko chalked it up to what he called lackluster performance from Ukraine’s negotiating team.

Then came a sharp critique on another missed opportunity—extending the Lend-Lease program: “Lend-Lease would’ve opened up U.S. military stockpiles for us. Right now, Russia is ramping up offensives on critical fronts. We need fortifications, minefields, anti-personnel mines, and remote mining systems. These tools are gathering dust in warehouses, and we could’ve made our defenses impenetrable!”

Poroshenko argued the new U.S. administration will be laser-focused on corruption in Ukraine. “The bad news for those in power? The Americans know more than the government thinks. They’re planning a no-nonsense audit, and they know exactly where to look. The first question they’ll ask is, ‘How are you spending American taxpayers’ money?’ Ukrainian officials better be ready because if we fumble, we risk losing critical military, defense, and financial aid,” he warned.
