Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has inflicted environmental damage exceeding $60 billion, with over 5,500 documented crimes against the Ukrainian ecosystem, according to Ukraine’s Minister of Environmental Protection, Ruslan Strilets.

“Up to now, we’ve recorded more than 5,500 environmental crimes by the enemy. The total damage has already surpassed $60 billion, and unfortunately, this figure continues to rise,” Strilets emphasized.

The environmental impact extends beyond Ukraine’s borders, affecting neighboring countries like Romania and Moldova. For instance, a fire at a port in the Odesa region led to air pollution in Moldova.

“This is a transboundary impact, and it carries entirely different responsibilities. When calculating such damages, I believe not only Ukraine will have the right to seek compensation for the consequences of this armed aggression in the future,” Strilets stated.
