In a bid to “repurpose’ the sites of relation to Ukraine’s history, Russian occupational officials reportedly plan to convert the Azovstal steel plant in occupied Mariupol into a tourist attraction, according to Ukraine’s Mariupol City Council.

The project, which have surfaced on pro-Russian social media platforms, outline the proposed transformation of the industrial site into a “tourist park” as Russian-led officials believe that the move will help attract visitors to the city.

Ukraine’s Mariupol City Council criticized the proposal, arguing, “The occupational officials are attempting to erase any trace of Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion. Azovstal was a symbol of our defenders’ resilience, who held out for 86 days during the siege of Mariupol in the spring of 2022.”
