The border city of Sumy came under attack in the early hours of September 17 after  Russian troops launched a massive drone barrage targeting the local energy facilities.

According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration (OVA), the attack involved multiple Shahed drones, which struck energy sites across three districts – Konotop, Okhtyrka, and Sumy. The strikes left a number of towns and villages in disarray making key infrastructure like water supply systems and hospitals switch into backup power sources.

Ukrainian air defenses said they shot down 16 of the drones in the region. Emergency teams are already on the ground, trying to restore power and repair damage.
