Russian spy detained in Donetsk region – SBU

IUkraine’s Security Service, the SBU, said  it has arrested a Russian spy who was gathering intelligence on Ukrainian troops in the Kramatorsk area.

The 52-year-old Druzhkivka native was snooping on the positions of Ukrainian artillery units stationed near Chasiv Yar.  Apart from scouting artillery positions, he was also tasked to look for arms and ammunition depots.

The suspect had been recruited by his acquiantance who fled to Russia in 2014 and later joined Russian National Guard. As a go-between, the man helped pass the gathered intelligence from occupied Donetsk to Russian forces.

A search of the spy’s home helped seize mobile phones and SIM cards used to communicate with the enemy.

The suspect could face a life sentence as he is facing treason charges under Article 111 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
