Storming Russian forces have seized “around half” of the eastern Ukrainian town of Toretsk in the Donetsk region. though Ukrainian Army is still clinging onto the remaining parts of the town, according to Vasyl Chynchyk, head of Toretsk’s Military Civil Administration.

“So far, the enemy hasn’t advanced or captured any positions or buildings,” said the official, arguing that “about 40-50% of the city is currently under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces” as they are putting up a strong fight and “holding their positions as best they can.”

What makes the situation worse is that some 1,150 civilians are still in Toretsk, as the town faces relentless bombardments.

“We’re doing everything we can. Unfortunately, of the people left behind, many have only the clothes on their backs—identification documents are lost, burned, or buried somewhere in basements or destroyed apartments,” Chynchyk added.

The authorities are trying to evacuate some residents, with seven people successfully evacuated on Thusday. “Three of them were taken out with the help of the National Police, while four others were evacuated thanks to the military,” Chynchyk added.
