On April 11, Ukrzaliznytsia railway operator started the construction of the European gauge railway from the borderline town of Chop to Uzhhorod.

Uzhhorod will become the first regional center of Ukraine to be connected to Europe by the European gauge railway.

According to the prime minister, this will make it possible to launch a direct railway connection between Uzhhorod and Vienna, Bratislava, Kosice, Budapest, Prague, Bucharest, Dresden and Belgrade.

Denys Shmyhal noted that the implementation of the project will create a transport hub in Uzhhorod, which will provide a convenient and quick transfer of passengers between broad-gauge trains and trains of EU countries.

The construction of this European railway will be financed by EU grant funds that Ukrzaliznytsia received within the framework of the Connecting Europe Facility program.

In the near future, it is planned to use EU funds to implement similar projects in Lviv and Chernivtsi.

According to the head of Ukrzaliznytsia, the total amount of the project is UAH 1.3 billion. The term of the project is 14 months.
