Ukraine has no plans to extend its contract for the transit of Russian gas once it expires in 2025, said prime minister Denys Shmyhal announced during his joint press conference with Slovak counterpart Robert Fico on Monday.

Shmyhal emphasized that Ukraine’s “strategic goal” is to impose sanctions on Russian gas to cripple the Kremlin’s revenues coming from it. He admitted that some countries like Slovakia are still dependent on Russian gas supplies, but expressed optimism that the situatin will see such countries veer toward diversifying energy sources.

He though said that Kyiv is committed to its obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union and the provisions of the Energy Charter Treaty.
