Ukrainian agricultural sector needs to make animal welfare one of the ‘top priorities’, said Taras Vysotsky, agricultural deputy minister, during the online conference for World Farm Animals Day.
Vysotsky stressed that animal welfare stands as one of the key priorities in European agriculture, and Ukraine needs to start integrating these practices into its own production methods.
To quickly implement European animal welfare standards in Ukrainian legislation and farming, the deputy minister argued the country needs a ‘clear understanding’of the practical steps both the state and businessesshould take to meet EU standards.
The government will need to work on clear “guidelines and priorities” for adopting animal welfare principles, ensuring that Ukrainian agricultural producers can put it into life in the most effecient way.
The official called on Ukrainian businesses not to lose time and adopt EU animal welfare practices today.
Earlier, it was reported that in September, Ukraine launched the Unified Pet Register, allowing owners to register their pets and obtain an electronic vet passport.
