The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said on Monday it has officially approved the delivery of the new “Khorunzhyi” armored personnel carrier  to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.  An ‘extensive modernization” of the Soviet-era BTR-60, the vehicle is made of high-quality Finnish steel, significantly enhancing its ballistic protection without adding extra weight.

The vehicle’s armor provides full perimeter protection against 7.62 mm steel-core bullets, while the frontal armor is capable of withstanding shots from a large-caliber machine gun fired from a distance of 10 meters.  The vehicle’s hull design and anti-mine seating are capable of safeguarding the crew from blasts equivalent to up to 6 kg of TNT.

Powered by a 330-horsepower diesel engine, the “Khorunzhyi” can reach speeds exceeding 80 km/h, with a range of over 500 km.

It also boasts advanced electronics, video surveillance cameras, an air conditioning system, and an autonomous generator, allowing the vehicle to operate with the engine turned off. The “Khorunzhyi” is armed with a combat module that can be fitted with either a 14.5 mm machine gun or a 30×113 mm cannon.
