The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico has formally requested the Mexican government to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of Mexico’s newly elected president Claudia Sheinbaum.
The Russian leader and the Ukrainian president Zelenskyy are among a host of the world leaders who were earlier invited to the event scheduled for October 1.
In their letter made public on Thursday, Ukrainian diplomats expressed gratitude for the invitation extended to president Zelensky and called on Mexican government to enforce the international arrest warrant against Putin who had been issued an arrest warrant by the ICC in 2023.
“We hope that the Mexican government is aware that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal, with an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for his alleged role in the abduction and forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia. Mexico recognizes the jurisdiction of this court,” the letter states.
The inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum is scheduled for October 1.
